Surroundings and natural setting of the watchpoint

Les Rochers des Sommêtres

Official name of the site: Les Rochers des Sommêtres
Municipality: Le Noirmont / Muriaux, Switzerland
Altitude: 1080 m
Time: GMT
Geographical coordinates: 6.57'56.24" E 47.14'11.49" N

Geographically, les Sommêtres are part of the municipality of Muriaux. The southern base of the mountains constitutes the boundary with the municipality of Noirmont. Already in the 14th century, there was a watch tower at this site. When an invasion was about to take place, the alarm was given with a mirror, hence the German name "Spiegelberg" (mirror mountain). The watchpoint is very interesting for the autumn migration of raptors. From the vantage point on the summit, there is a good view from the east to the southwest.

Migration calendar

During spring, plenty of birds can be heard, with five species of tits breeding nearby, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Marsh Tit and Crested Tit. Among the Turdidae, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, Fieldfare and Black Redstart are definitely breeding. Other species commonly seen during the breeding season are Nuthatch, Goldcrest, Greenfinch, Starling, Chiffchaff, Bullfinch and Woodpigeon.

During the spring survey, starting from mid March, it may be interesting to visit the watchpoint and observe the return migration. During autumn, the postnuptial migration is starting from mid August and even earlier for Swifts and Black Kites (among the earliest migrants). These are followed by Honey Buzzards, often passing at close range. Next to the numerous raptors, White Storks, Black Storks, impressive Woodpigeon flocks and many song birds are migrating.

Access

By car or by train. At Noirmont, take the direction of Clinique Roc Montès (cardiovascular readaptation centre) and 200 m beyond the old church (two churches) in a wide road bend, drive straight on towards les Combes. At the crossroads, continue straight on towards the car park. Walk to the north opposite a small chalet and follow the yellow signs for a 15 minutes walk. Other possibility: from the railway station CJ at Muriaux, follow the road opposite ascending to les Sommêtres for about a 20 minutes walk. Cars are not allowed on this road. Mind the traffic fines!

Places to stay and eat

A mountain refuge, built by a local mountaineers association, accommodates visitors. It is guarded by the guests, it is possible to spend the night there, and it provides ten bunk beds. During the peak of autumn migration, I recommend you to spend two or three days.
