The ringing station Subigerberg

The "Subigerberg"ringing station was started in 1968 by the Cantonal Bird Protection Association of Solothurn (VVS/BirdLife Solothurn). The Subigerberg is located between Gänsbrunnen (SO) and Court (BE), shortly before the pass "Binzberg". The station is located on an important migration axis of birds of prey and songbirds. In 2012 the station, originally built in 1973, was extended with an new building, an exhibition and the nature experince trail called "Husis Reise".

Every year from August to the beginning of November intensive bird migration can be observed, from March to May also a weaker spring migration. Thanks to the extensive pastures interspersed with plenty of thorn hedges, the Subigerberg is also an important breeding and resting place. Every year red-backed shrike, tree pipit and yellowhammer breed in the area. The insect-rich pastures and berry-rich bushes are mainly used by warblers, thrushes and finches to replenish their energy reserves during migration.

For these reasons, annual stock mapping is carried out on Subigerberg in spring. In autumn, bird migration is studied for four weeks. Songbirds are caught in nets an ringed for scientific purposes, in addition to migratory bird observations with fixed observation periods.

Visitors are very welcome on the Subigerberg.
